In a new development in the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah, has called on the United Nations to establish an air corridor to deliver humanitarian aid to nearly one million people displaced by the Israeli campaign in various regions of the country.
According to a statement from his press office, Berri urged the United Nations to “establish an air bridge to ensure the delivery of relief supplies.” He also simultaneously called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Lebanese Red Cross to “fulfill their duty” in delivering food and medical supplies to the Lebanese in the south.
In a related context, UN agencies launched an appeal on Tuesday for more than $400 million to provide urgent assistance to hundreds of thousands of people displaced by Israeli strikes in Lebanon, according to a statement issued following a meeting with the Prime Minister in Beirut.
The statement said: “Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza launched an urgent appeal for $426 million to mobilize urgent resources for civilians affected by the escalating conflict that has led to a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.”
These developments come amid growing concerns about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Lebanon, where thousands of displaced people face difficult conditions due to shortages of food, medicine, and basic services. International organizations and Lebanese authorities are seeking to intensify their efforts to meet the urgent needs of those affected and alleviate their suffering in this worsening humanitarian crisis.
