Casablanca, September 29, 2024 – The Casablanca Court of Appeal witnessed new developments today in the case of the accused Said Naciri, former parliamentarian and ex-president of Wydad Athletic Club, and Abdenbi Bioui, also a former parliamentarian. Naciri’s lawyer has requested that Moroccan artist Latifa Raâfat be summoned to testify before the court.
These developments come as part of the case known in the media as the “Desert Escobar,” named after Lhaj Ahmed Benbrahim, Latifa Raâfat’s ex-husband and the main defendant in the case.
The trial sessions resumed on Friday, where Naciri’s defense requested Latifa Raâfat be called as a witness. Lhaj Ahmed Benbrahim, known as the “Desert Escobar,” has also been summoned to testify before the court. Surprisingly, his legal status has changed from accused to witness and civil party, which has astonished the defense team.
Naciri’s defense emphasized that there are many contradictions in Benbrahim’s statements, stressing that their client has no relationship with the main defendant, and that the latter had forged documents from inside the prison. In addition to the Moroccan artist and her ex-husband, other witnesses have been called to appear before the court.
It’s worth noting that the “Desert Escobar” case has brought down both Said Naciri and Abdenbi Bioui, former leaders in the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM). The defendants, along with about ten other individuals, are being prosecuted in this international drug case, which originated from accusations made by the drug baron, claiming that influential figures had benefited from his money.
The trial continues amidst great media attention, as Moroccan public opinion eagerly awaits further developments in this controversial case.
