The Eastern region of the Kingdom of Morocco has experienced exceptional rainfall in recent weeks, leading to a significant rise in water levels in many dams, with some reaching their maximum capacity.
Data released by the “Al Ma Dyalna” platform, affiliated with the Ministry of Equipment and Water, indicated that water inflows to dams in the Eastern region increased by 147% compared to last year, representing a massive increase in the region’s water reserves.
The Figuig province topped the list of areas with the highest rainfall, recording 108 millimeters of rain, followed by Jerada province with 52 millimeters, then Oujda-Angad prefecture with 45 millimeters. Meanwhile, other provinces such as Nador, Berkane, and Driouch recorded much lower rainfall.
As a result of these heavy rains, the water reserves in the Eastern region’s dams rose from 155 million cubic meters to 288 million cubic meters, an increase of 133 million cubic meters. Three dams reached their maximum capacity: Oued Za Dam, Sfissif Dam, and Rekiza Dam.
These heavy rainfalls are considered good news for the Eastern region, as they contribute to enhancing water security and support various economic sectors, especially agriculture. They will also help alleviate the drought that the region has suffered from in recent years.
This improvement in the water situation comes after years of drought, promising positive prospects for economic and social development in the Eastern region of Morocco.
