During a press conference following the weekly Cabinet meeting, Moroccan government spokesperson Mustafa Baitas announced the prosecution of 152 individuals for inciting illegal migration.
This move comes as part of the authorities’ efforts to combat social media campaigns encouraging youth to migrate through irregular means, a trend that has seen a recent surge.
Baitas noted that nearly 3,000 attempted illegal migrations were recorded from the city of Fnideq. However, the authorities successfully thwarted all these attempts through timely interventions.
The minister expressed regret over the tragic events in Fnideq but emphasized that illegal migration is not a problem exclusive to Morocco; it is a global issue affecting many countries.
He commended the professionalism and restraint demonstrated by public forces in managing the situation, ensuring that legal protocols were followed, and the safety of the individuals involved was respected.
Baitas affirmed that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is working to address the underlying causes driving youth to seek irregular migration, calling for a legal and humanitarian approach that safeguards the rights of all parties involved.
