Merzouga (Morocco) – The Merzouga desert in southeastern Morocco recently witnessed an extraordinary event that amazed both locals and visitors alike. The golden sand dunes transformed into a stunning waterscape following unusually heavy rainfall in the region.

Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy rains led to the formation of watercourses and lakes amidst the sand, creating a scene many described as “unusual” and “magical.” Mohammed Al-Alawi, a local resident, said: “We’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s astonishing to see water flowing between the sand dunes.”

Meteorological experts added that this phenomenon is rare in desert areas and highlights the climate changes the region is experiencing. Dr. Ahmed Al-Nasiri, a geography professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat, stated: “This phenomenon reflects the extent of climate change impacts on desert regions and demonstrates nature’s ability to suddenly reshape the geographical landscape.”

This exceptional event has attracted the attention of tourists and photographers who flocked to the area to document this unique scene. Sarah Martinez, a Spanish tourist, said: “I came to Merzouga to see the desert, and I never expected to see lakes and waterways. It’s an incredible sight!”
