Press Release from the General Directorate of National Security – September 5, 2024The Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdellatif Hammouchi, participated in the eighth INTERPOL meeting of heads of security and police in the Middle East and North Africa, held on September 3 and 4 at the headquarters of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) in Lyon, France.
Moroccan Delegation
Abdellatif Hammouchi led the Moroccan delegation participating in this important security meeting, which brought together heads of security and police from the Middle East and North Africa, as well as representatives from the Comoros, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, and Mauritania.
Showcasing Moroccan Experience
This meeting provided an opportunity for the Moroccan National Security services to showcase their experience in combating emerging crimes at the regional level and to discuss the emerging security challenges, including organized crime, financial flows resulting from cybercrime, threats of recruitment and rapid radicalization online, financing through cryptocurrencies, and the risks of terrorist attacks using drones.
Combating Cybercrime
The Moroccan delegation presented a comprehensive overview of shared experiences and information related to combating cybercrime, particularly in light of the increasing threats posed by the misuse of new technologies for criminal or terrorist purposes.
INTERPOL’s Solutions to Address Threats
The meeting also featured INTERPOL’s presentation of various solutions, software applications, and databases that highlight the organization’s response to new threats and risks. This included the development of INTERPOL’s biometric platform, assessing international criminal threats, and measuring INTERPOL’s network for analysis and intelligence.
Bilateral Meetings
On the sidelines of the meeting, Abdellatif Hammouchi held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Nail Gouton, the new Director of Cybercrime at INTERPOL, where they discussed projects and prospects for joint cooperation between Morocco and the international police organization in neutralizing and combating risks associated with the use of technology in criminal and terrorist activities.
Field Visit
The Director General of National Security also conducted a field visit to the INTERPOL Command and Coordination Center, where he learned about the center’s functions and discussed with officials ways to enhance cooperation in cross-border investigations and international pursuits of wanted persons.
Discussions with INTERPOL Officials
During the meeting, the Moroccan delegation also engaged in bilateral and multilateral discussions with INTERPOL officials and security and police agencies in the region, focusing on ways to coordinate efforts to address security challenges and risks from a shared perspective capable of keeping pace with the regional and international extensions of organized crime and terrorism.
