In a significant diplomatic development, the United Arab Emirates has announced the success of its mediation efforts between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, resulting in a new exchange of prisoners of war. This exchange involved 230 prisoners, equally distributed between both sides.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that this latest exchange brings the total number of prisoners exchanged between the two countries to 1,788, thanks to Emirati mediation.
The Ministry expressed its gratitude to the governments of Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation with the UAE’s mediation, noting that this achievement, coming about a month after a previous successful mediation, affirms the UAE’s commitment as a trusted mediator in supporting the diplomatic path towards resolving the crisis between the two countries.
The Ministry emphasized that the success of this new mediation, the seventh since the beginning of 2024, reflects the friendly relations and partnership between the UAE and both nations.
In a statement, the Ministry reaffirmed the UAE’s ongoing commitment to supporting all efforts and initiatives aimed at reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict, stressing that dialogue and de-escalation are the only means to resolve the crisis, which will help mitigate humanitarian impacts.
It is worth noting that since the beginning of the current year, the UAE’s mediation efforts have resulted in six prisoner of war exchanges between Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, in December 2022, they facilitated the exchange of two detainees between the United States and the Russian Federation.
