Morocco achieved a historic accomplishment by winning first place in the 31st edition of the African Mathematical Olympiad, held at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 10 to 20, 2024.
According to a statement from the Ministry of National Education, the Moroccan national team scored 201 points, a record never before achieved by any country in the history of the Olympiad. The Algerian team came in second place with 186 points, while the Tunisian team secured third place with 133 points.
In terms of medals, Moroccan competitors won three gold medals and three silver medals, distributed as follows:
Gold Medals:
- Yassine Kemmouh (42/42 points, perfect score) from the Casablanca-Settat region
- Adam Mahdan (35/42 points) from the Souss-Massa region
- Sami Moussaoui (33/42 points) from the Oriental region
Silver Medals:
- Sara El Messnaoui (31/42 points) from the Casablanca-Settat region
- Soukaina El Branssi (30/42 points) from the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region
- Lina Chaker (30/42 points) from the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region
Each of the three female competitors also won a gold medal in the female category (PAMO Girls).
This edition of the African Mathematical Olympiad saw the participation of 27 countries, with each country represented by a team of 6 competitors (3 girls and 3 boys). Competitors took two tests over two consecutive days, each lasting four and a half hours.
The Ministry of National Education, Preschool Education, and Sports congratulated the students who honored their country in this scientific event, as well as the supervisors who ensured their preparation for this continental meeting. The ministry also thanked the families of these students for their support and encouragement in the pursuit of excellence and success, wishing our champions success in future editions and in their academic and professional careers.
