Moroccan Ministry of Health Confirms Close Monitoring of Global Monkeypox Developments

The Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection has announced that it is closely monitoring the epidemiological situation of monkeypox (M-pox) which is currently experiencing a rapid and widespread outbreak in several African countries. The Ministry stated in a press release issued today, Thursday, that this monitoring is part of the international epidemiological surveillance system.

The Ministry indicated that it has updated the national plan for monitoring and responding to this epidemic, taking into account global epidemiological developments, scientific advancements regarding the disease, and recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The statement revealed that Morocco had implemented and activated a proactive national plan since June 2022, which resulted in the detection of 5 cases up to March of this year. The Ministry confirmed that most of these cases were imported and did not cause transmission to contacts. They were also medically mild and fully recovered without any complications.

The Ministry reassured citizens about the level of vigilance and preparedness in Morocco, affirming its commitment to continuous communication and providing the latest updates.

The statement noted that the Director-General of the WHO recently declared that “M-pox” constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, for the second time in two years. This decision comes in light of the rapid spread of the epidemic since last year and the high mortality rate recorded in one African country, necessitating global efforts and cooperation to limit its spread.

The Ministry concluded its statement by confirming the continued reporting of cases worldwide to this day, emphasizing the importance of ongoing vigilance and international cooperation in addressing this health challenge.

The Ministry of Health stressed that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to the public as necessary, maintaining its commitment to transparency and proactive health management.
