Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, has expressed strong condemnation of the genocide being committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. In an interview with an Arab news channel, Albanese questioned how the world could accept these ongoing crimes, emphasizing that no civilized country could accept such atrocities.
Albanese pointed out that Israel deliberately ignores international law and order, and uses European funds to finance its operations against Palestinians. She stressed the need for an immediate cessation of the war. She affirmed that Israel, as the occupying power of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, must be held accountable for its actions.
The UN Special Rapporteur added that countries supporting Israel with weapons are violating the Genocide Convention and are complicit in these crimes. She also noted that the situation where Israel enjoyed impunity is beginning to change today, in light of growing global awareness and popular movements in Western countries, which are no longer content with just protesting but have established boycott movements against Israel.
In concluding her remarks, Albanese considered that if Israel were to kill Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, it would be an extrajudicial assassination outside the framework of international law.
The international debate continues over what is happening in the Palestinian territories amidst increasing calls from human rights organizations to stop the violence and hold accountable those responsible.
