The Strait of Gibraltar has witnessed a new incident in a series of orca attacks on boats, where a British sailboat was attacked by these killer whales, leading to its sinking off the coast of Tangier.
The incident occurred on the night of July 24, when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Tarifa received a distress call from the crew of the boat “Bonhomme William”. The crew reported that a group of orcas had attacked their boat and caused severe damage.
While rescue teams were on their way, the orca attack continued, causing the boat to start sinking. The rescue team managed to arrive in time to save the three sailors and recover part of the high-risk materials before the boat sank.
It’s worth noting that this incident is the third of its kind in the area over the past three months. Last May, another sailboat suffered a similar attack off Tangier, and its crew was rescued by an oil tanker passing through the area.
Scientists confirm that no fatal orca attacks on humans have been recorded in their natural environment, despite them being among the most dangerous predators in the ocean. Researchers believe this behavior might just be a form of play for young orcas. Interestingly, these whales seem to be interested only in boats less than 15 meters long and in motion.
These recurring incidents are causing concern among sailors and local authorities, calling for more studies to understand this behavior and find solutions to protect boats and human lives.
