On July 30, 2024, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad issued an official statement announcing the immediate withdrawal of its ambassador to the French Republic.
This decision came in response to the French government’s declaration of “categorical and explicit” support for what Algeria described as “the colonial reality imposed on the Western Sahara territory”. Algeria considered this step unprecedented by any previous French government, accusing the current administration of dismissiveness and recklessness without evaluating the consequences.
The statement indicated that France’s recognition of the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole basis for resolving the Western Sahara conflict is a violation of international legitimacy and a denial of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Algeria also considered this position contradictory to the United Nations’ efforts to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara.
The statement added that with this stance, France is evading its special responsibilities stemming from its permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
As a result, the Algerian government decided to immediately withdraw its ambassador from France, with the Chargé d’Affaires assuming responsibility for Algeria’s diplomatic representation in France henceforth.
This development reflects the intensity of diplomatic tension between Algeria and France over the Western Sahara issue and is expected to have implications for bilateral relations between the two countries in the near future.
