In a significant judicial development, the Criminal Chamber of the Casablanca Court of Appeal has issued its verdict in the case of a staged theft broadcast on “Hit Radio”. The court upheld the initial ruling, convicting the famous radio host Mohammed Bousfiha, known as “Momo”, to four months of enforceable imprisonment.
In the details of the verdict, the court reduced the sentence of the main defendant “Amine S.” from five months to four months of enforceable imprisonment, while sentencing the defendant “Mustapha” to three months in prison. In the civil aspect of the case, the court ordered the defendants “Amine” and “Mustapha” to pay compensation of 25,000 dirhams to Hit Radio.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office had accused the radio host and other defendants of fabricating a fictitious theft and broadcasting it live on air. The representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasized the seriousness of this act, pointing to its impact on listeners and its disrespect to security institutions.
For his part, “Momo” denied before the court any prior knowledge of the other defendants, asserting that his programs aim to entertain and provide various contests.
It’s worth noting that the case began when a video went viral of a phone call on “Hit Radio”, where a caller claimed to have been robbed of his phone during the call and alleged that the police did not respond to his complaint. Investigations later revealed that the incident was fabricated, leading to the arrest of those involved on charges including inventing a fictitious crime and spreading false news that affects the public sense of security.
This verdict highlights the importance of media responsibility and the dangers of spreading false information, especially through widely broadcast media outlets.
