The National Initiative for Human Development: A Quarter Century of Royal Social Work

On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne of his esteemed ancestors, we present a report on the Moroccan monarch’s most prominent achievements in combating poverty and social vulnerability:

Since ascending to the throne 25 years ago, King Mohammed VI has given special attention to social issues, earning him the title “King of the Poor”. This concern culminated in the launch of the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) in 2005, which marked a turning point in the kingdom’s social policy.

In its first phase, the initiative targeted 360 rural communities and 250 urban neighborhoods among the poorest in Morocco. After 19 years since its launch, the National Coordinator of the Initiative, Mr. Dardouri, revealed tangible achievements, including:

  • Construction of 1,700 km of tracks and roads
  • Connecting over 88,000 homes to the drinking water network
  • Providing electricity to 20,000 homes
  • Supporting more than 2,000 social centers
  • Creating 130 youth platforms benefiting 380,000 young people
  • Establishing 11,500 youth enterprises and supporting 4,700 cooperative projects

In health and education, the initiative achieved significant results:

  • Reducing the maternal mortality rate at birth to 72.6 cases per 100,000 births
  • Increasing the rate of pregnancy monitoring under medical supervision to 88.5%
  • Creating more than 9,400 preschool classrooms, raising the school enrollment rate for children from 33% in 2017/2018 to 83.5% in 2023/2024

These achievements confirm King Mohammed VI’s commitment to improving the living conditions of Moroccan citizens, especially the most vulnerable groups. As the kingdom celebrates the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty’s reign, the National Initiative for Human Development remains a testament to his ambitious social vision for Morocco.
