In a move reflecting the depth of security cooperation between Morocco and France, Paris has announced the participation of Moroccan security agencies in safeguarding the Olympic Games scheduled for summer 2024.
This collaboration was confirmed through a series of high-level meetings between officials from both countries. In Rabat, Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit met with his French counterpart Gérald Darmanin, who affirmed his country’s intention to strengthen security cooperation with Morocco in counterterrorism and Olympic Games security.
Last June also saw important meetings in France between Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of Morocco’s National Security and Territory Surveillance, and his counterparts in the French police. Discussions focused on establishing proactive mechanisms for risk assessment and information exchange within the framework of cooperation to secure the Olympics.
Commenting on this development, Abbas El Wardi, Professor of Political Science at Mohammed V University in Rabat, explained that France’s reliance on Moroccan security agencies reflects Paris’s trust in Moroccan expertise and confirms Rabat’s continued status as a strategic partner.
El Wardi added that this security cooperation would enhance bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly at the diplomatic level. He noted that France’s choice of Morocco for this important mission reaffirms the Kingdom’s position as a key and traditional partner for Paris.
This step comes in the context of increasing security challenges facing major international events and highlights the importance of international cooperation in the security field. It also underscores the accumulated expertise of Moroccan security agencies in counterterrorism and organized crime prevention.
The collaboration demonstrates the strategic importance of Morocco-France relations and the mutual trust between their security apparatuses. It also positions Morocco as a crucial player in ensuring the safety and success of one of the world’s most significant sporting events, further cementing its role in international security cooperation.
