Tangier Authorities Intervene to Stop Public Beach Monopolization

In an incident that occurred today on “Studio” beach in Tangier, local authorities intervened to end illegal practices by a beach operator following a complaint from a group of young people.

The details of the incident began when four young men visited the beach for recreation, bringing their own umbrella. As soon as they sat down, they were approached by one of the individuals monopolizing areas of the beach, demanding they move away, claiming the area was reserved for rental.

The young men refused to comply with this request, asserting that the beach was public property. However, the individual rudely insisted on his position. In a commendable move, the young men decided to withdraw quietly to avoid conflict.

But the story didn’t end there. The youth returned after a few minutes accompanied by the Pasha (local governor) and auxiliary forces. Immediately, the authorities removed the chairs and umbrellas placed by the offending individual, explaining to him that he had no right to prevent people from sitting in a public place, in addition to violating the terms of the permit granted by the authorities.

Images from the scene showed the authorities collecting the equipment, waiting for a vehicle to arrive for confiscation. The Pasha’s actions and quick response to the complaint were well-received by citizens.

This incident highlights the importance of citizens’ awareness of their rights and the necessity of reporting any violations. It also underscores the role of authorities in maintaining the public nature of beaches and ensuring everyone’s right to enjoy them.

The swift action taken by the local authorities in this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to preserve public spaces and combat unauthorized commercial exploitation of beaches. It also emphasizes the power of citizen engagement in upholding community rights and the effectiveness of prompt official response to public concerns.
