The Higher Institute of Nursing and Health Technologies in Meknes is engaged in the fight against smoking by fully integrating into the Smoke-Free Higher Education Institutions project, which embodies the institute’s strong commitment to creating a suitable smoke-free environment by signing the charter of the “Smoke-Free Higher Education Institutions” project, in partnership with the delegation of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection in Meknes, the Amal Association of Students of the Higher Institute of Nursing and Health Technologies in Meknes, with the support of the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in Fez Meknes.
The project, which was launched by Ministerial Decree 103/19 DP/22 of November 21, 2022, aims to reduce the prevalence of smoking among students by 2029.
Statistics show that the current smoking prevalence rates among adults over the age of 18 and students between 13 and 15 years old are 13.4% and 6%, respectively. Under this agreement, the Institute is committed to implementing this project in order to contribute to the achievement of the desired objectives. The Institute is keen to materialize this commitment by organizing communication and awareness-raising meetings in partnership with stakeholders, mainly representatives of the Population Directorate, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in Fès Meknes, the Health and Social Protection Delegation in Meknes, the Addiction Medicine Center in Meknes, administrators, professors and students of the Institute.
With the establishment of a steering committee by the different stakeholders, its main task is to supervise and implement the project at the institute.
The committee has developed a comprehensive action plan that includes the objectives and duration of the project, planned awareness activities, support programs and ways to quit smoking, as well as a series of initiatives aimed at creating an ideal smoke-free environment within the institute.
The main points of the “Smoke-Free Higher Education Institutions Project” are the mobilization of decision makers and informing different social segments, the formation of a steering committee, regular monitoring and evaluation, a training and information plan such as the integration of anti-smoking into the health and security policy of higher education institutions, the adoption of special supports on the subject, the prevention of all links with the tobacco industry and the provision of assistance for smoking cessation, the updating of awareness campaigns and finally the sharing of experiences with other partners.
As a reminder, on May 31, the Higher Institute of Nursing and Health Technologies in Meknes marked the World No Tobacco Day, a global event with awareness campaigns, lectures, interactive workshops and support programs for smoking cessation, which aims to raise awareness among the student community on this vital issue.
