The Social Sectors and Education, Culture, and Communication Committees of the Moroccan House of Representatives held a joint meeting on Wednesday to discuss the current situation in medical and pharmacy schools and the government’s response to it.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Ait Taleb, and the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui, presented briefings on the efforts made and measures taken by the government.
Both ministers emphasized that the comprehensive reform of the health sector aims to enhance Morocco’s medical sovereignty, noting that the government’s offer to students is “exceptional” and meets most of their demands.
Miraoui reviewed the government’s efforts in dialogue and finding solutions to resume studies in the colleges, including meetings with various stakeholders and a mediation initiative overseen by the government.
For his part, Ait Taleb explained the measures taken to improve training conditions and increase compensation for student trainees, in addition to measures related to health coverage and social aspects.
During the discussion, majority deputies called on students to “prioritize wisdom” and engage in social protection reforms, while opposition deputies urged flexibility and the need to find a compromise to end the crisis.
The meeting highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of medical students while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining the quality of medical education and healthcare services in Morocco. The ongoing dialogue between the government, students, and various stakeholders demonstrates the complexity of the issue and the need for a collaborative approach to find sustainable solutions.
This crisis and its resolution are crucial for Morocco’s healthcare system and its ambition to strengthen its medical sovereignty, making it a significant topic of national interest and debate.
