On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, the Government Council approved a draft decree signed by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Lefteit, which aims to create new administrative districts in Meknes, Fez, Khenifra and Zagora.
According to the introductory note to the draft decree, the new units aim to “increase the management capacities of the territorial administration in two communes (Fez and Meknes) and two regions (Khenifra and Zagora),” as well as “support administrative framing and keep pace with the demographic, social and urban transformations they are experiencing.”
The decree includes the promotion of the community of Oulad el-Tayeb in the Fes municipality to the level of a bashawiyah, which will result in the deletion of the Oulad el-Tayeb command, as well as the creation of the Ain el-Bayda command in Fes, whose territorial jurisdiction includes the community of Ain el-Bayda.
In the Meknes municipality, it was decided to create the Ait Welal command, whose territorial influence includes the Ait Welal community, which was previously under the Ain Arma command.
The decree also includes the creation of the Um al-Rabiya command in the Khenifra region, and in the Zagora region, it was decided to divide the Agdz district, which currently frames four communes, into two districts: Agdz and Maïdar.
At the national level, the number of districts will increase from 212 to 213, and the number of commands from 727 to 729.
