Düsseldorf, Germany – France captain Kylian Mbappé has suffered a broken nose during their 1-0 win over Austria in Düsseldorf, in their opening Group D match of Euro 2024 in Germany. The French Football Federation (FFF) has said that the player will not require surgery but will have to wear a mask upon his return to action.
The incident occurred in the 86th minute when Mbappé collided with Austrian defender Kevin Danso while attempting to head a cross. The player left the field in the 90th minute with blood coming from his nose.
The FFF confirmed the injury in a statement: “Mbappé underwent X-rays at a hospital in Düsseldorf and has returned to the France team’s base camp in Paderborn. A mask will be made for him to allow him to consider a return to the pitch after a period of care.”
However, Mbappé’s participation in France’s next match against the Netherlands in Leipzig on Friday is in doubt. Coach Didier Deschamps was pessimistic in a post-match press conference: “He’s not in good shape. He’s been hit on the nose, that’s for sure. We’ll see, but it looks complicated. I don’t have the information, decisions will be made. I can’t give precise details because I don’t have anything.”
Mbappé received treatment on the pitch, his white shirt stained with blood. He had to return to the pitch without the permission of Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano after seeing his teammates playing with ten men while he was receiving treatment off it. He sat down immediately and was shown a yellow card before being replaced by Olivier Giroud.
Despite his injury, Mbappé played a crucial role in France’s victory, providing the cross that led to the only goal of the game, an own goal by Austrian defender Maximilian Wöber.
The injury comes at a critical time in Euro 2024, and France will be hoping for a quick recovery from their captain for the upcoming matches in the competition.
