Hamas and Islamic Jihad Reject Ceasefire Plan and Demand Complete Halt to Aggression on Gaza

The Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad announced on Tuesday their rejection of the ceasefire plan in the Gaza Strip announced by US President Joe Biden on May 31, which he said was an Israeli proposal.

The two movements said in a joint statement, “The response gives priority to the interests of the Palestinian people and stresses the necessity of a complete halt to the ongoing aggression in Gaza,” adding that they are ready “to engage positively to reach an agreement that ends this war.”

Sources familiar with the negotiations told France Press that “Hamas’ official response to the ceasefire plan for Gaza includes several amendments,” noting that “the response contains amendments to the Israeli proposal, including a timetable for a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.”

The sources added that discussions will continue through Qatari and Egyptian mediation and in coordination with the United States.
