Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Reports 114 Cases of Methanol Poisoning

The Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region announces that between 6 PM on Monday, June 3, and 8 AM on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, 114 cases of methanol poisoning were recorded in Sidi Allal Tazi, located in the Kénitra province. These cases were confirmed through laboratory testing by the Moroccan Center for Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance in Rabat.

The consumption of methanol led to severe poisoning complications, resulting in the death of eight individuals—seven at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kénitra and one at the Zoubi Skirej Hospital in Souk El Arbaa.

Currently, 81 other individuals are receiving medical care across various hospitals in the region. This includes 28 cases at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kénitra, with three in the intensive care unit, while 38 individuals have been discharged after their conditions improved. Additionally, 40 cases are being treated at the Moulay Youssef Regional Hospital in Rabat, with two referred to the intensive care unit and 20 undergoing dialysis at the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat due to complications from methanol consumption.

Upon being notified of this tragic incident, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra swiftly mobilized its medical and nursing staff, as well as necessary resources, to provide care and medical attention to the affected individuals. This effort was in collaboration with various authorities and relevant parties, ensuring all health teams were on high alert from the onset. Resources were allocated to accommodate new cases at health institutions throughout the region, and local authorities coordinated a search for other potential cases that may have sought medical attention within the province.

The Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra urges all residents of Kénitra province to report any similar cases and to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility to prevent severe health complications.
