In a clear symbolism, the ‘African Lion’ military exercise concluded with a simulated ground attack in the Mahbas area, just 40 kilometres from the city of Tindouf, the stronghold of the separatist Polisario Front.
For weeks, media reports have revealed Morocco’s intention to launch a final offensive to secure the buffer zone, a move that reflects Rabat’s determination to resolve the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
The massive military exercise, which kicked off in mid-June, involved thousands of soldiers from several African countries and NATO in field exercises in the vast Sahrawi territories.
Recent footage of the exercise showed the Royal Armed Forces simulating a large-scale attack using tanks and heavy artillery against ‘enemy’ positions on the outskirts of Tindouf.
This comes at a time when the region is witnessing rising tensions, following Morocco’s decision in 2020 to open the Guergarat border crossing and expel bandits from the Polisario mercenaries.
