Rabat, Morocco – Social media pioneers in Morocco and abroad have reacted heavily to a wide solidarity campaign with the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, after she was accused of having a romantic relationship with an Australian billionaire in an Australian media report.
Activists on various platforms, especially Twitter, used the hashtag #Laila_Benali_All_With_You to express their support for the Moroccan minister and refute the accusations against her, which they considered a tendentious campaign targeting Morocco and its position in the field of renewable energy.
Support and trust
Tweeters competed in expressing their support for Minister Benali, praising her competence and achievements in the field of energy, and affirming their confidence in her integrity and behaviour.
One tweeter wrote: ‘We are building and succeeding and our success is infuriating our enemies. We support our minister and encourage her to sue the yellow newspaper.’
A conspiracy against Morocco
Many activists saw the campaign against Minister Benali as a conspiracy targeting Morocco and its policies in the field of renewable energy, due to her tireless efforts to strengthen the Kingdom’s position in this field.
Another tweeter wrote: ‘Since she took over the ministry, she has been targeted because of her efforts to promote Morocco’s position in the field of renewable energies. She is the victim of a tendentious campaign.’
Going beyond borders
The campaign of solidarity with Minister Benali went beyond Morocco’s borders, with Arab tweeters expressing their support for her, posting photos and videos of her speeches emphasising her determination to move forward with her work despite the challenges.
A Saudi tweeter wrote: ‘We Saudis, the sons of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, support you, Leila.’
A national symbol
Some tweeters considered Minister Benali a symbol of patriotism and perseverance, placing her among Morocco’s ‘lions’ alongside other prominent national figures.
A tweeter wrote: ‘What Leila Benali is being subjected to confirms the status she has reached as a national symbol and Moroccan competence. She is one of the lions of Morocco who are targeted because they are successful.’
A strong message
The solidarity campaign with Minister Benali showed the strength of national cohesion in Morocco and sent a strong message to opponents that the Kingdom will not allow its symbols and competencies to be targeted. It also highlighted the dangers of malicious campaigns that aim to destabilise and spread suspicion among people.
