Rabat, May 22, 2024: The Rabat Administrative Court today ruled to compel the National Office of Railways (ONCF) to pay 500,000 dirhams in compensation to the family of a 4-year-old boy who died after falling from an escalator at Rabat Agdal train station in a tragic incident that occurred in early November 2023.
The child’s mother had filed a complaint against ONCF, holding the agency responsible for the fatal accident. After multiple hearings, the court concluded that ONCF bears responsibility for this tragic incident and issued its final verdict to compensate the family for the moral damages they suffered.
According to the details of the incident, the child fell from an escalator inside the train station while ascending with his father, due to the loss of a part of the glass railing of the escalator, which led to his fall from a height of 10 meters.
Police reports that attended the scene confirmed that the child was accompanied by his father, of Iraqi nationality, and that the family was coming from Kenitra when the tragic incident occurred.
This case serves as a reminder of the need to ensure the safety of public transport users and provide a safe environment for all passengers, especially children. It also highlights the importance of responsible entities fulfilling their responsibilities in maintaining and securing their facilities on a regular basis to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
