The Ministry of Economy and Finance has announced the start of the implementation of a partial reform of the butane gas price subsidy system. The reform, which will take effect from 20 May 2024, aims to reduce subsidies for gas cylinders, with a focus on targeting support to the most needy households through the unified social registry.
The announced changes include a subsidy reduction of AED 2.5 for a 3kg gas cylinder and AED 10 for a 12kg gas cylinder.
In addition, the government continues to implement the comprehensive reform of the social protection system, in accordance with Framework Law No. 09.21, which aims to unify and mainstream social programmes and strengthen direct support to eligible families.
It is worth noting that the government has postponed the implementation of any increases in butane gas prices so far. These measures are part of a broader effort to balance between reducing subsidies and enhancing social welfare.
