The Israeli army announced on Tuesday morning that it had completely taken control of the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip and was carrying out extensive combing operations in the area, despite the efforts of the mediators to reach a truce.
Meanwhile, a US State Department spokesman said that the United States had made clear its views to Israel regarding a major ground invasion of the city of Rafah, in the first response from Washington since Israeli forces took control of the Rafah crossing in the Gaza Strip.
“We continue to believe that the hostage agreement is in the interests of Israel and the Palestinian people, will lead to an immediate ceasefire agreement and will allow for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza,” the spokesman added in an email.
This operation resulted in the killing of 20 Palestinians in night raids, and the Israeli army dropped new leaflets to evacuate the population.
The closure of the Rafah crossing condemns cancer patients to death in light of the collapse of the health system.
The Israeli Defense Minister said that the Rafah operation will continue until Hamas is eliminated there or until the first hostages return.
On Tuesday evening, a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo from Doha to follow up on ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas said in a statement: “To follow up on efforts with the mediator brothers in Egypt and Qatar, to achieve an agreement to stop the aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip. The movement’s delegation includes the brothers Zaher Jabarin, Dr. Ghazi Hamad, and Muhammad Nasr.”
This comes on the eve of Hamas announcing its approval of the truce proposal.
