The National Rally of Independents parliamentary group intends to hold the government accountable today, Monday, during the oral question session, regarding the reasons behind the spread of electronic cigarette use among children and adolescents, due to the seriousness of this phenomenon on the health of this age group.
This comes after the Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, revealed shocking figures indicating the worsening trend of electronic cigarette use among children and adolescents.
The minister explained, in response to a written question posed by MP Mustafa Ibrahimi, a member of the Justice and Development Party parliamentary group, that electronic cigarettes are more commonly used compared to regular cigarettes among school students aged between 15 and 17, with a rate of 2% for males and 5% for females, while 7.7% of them had previously used them before the age of ten.
The figures indicated that 9.6% of children obtained electronic cigarettes between the ages of 10 and 12, while the percentage increased to 23.4% between the ages of 13 and 14, reaching 60% at the age of 15 and above.
These figures add to recent studies warning of the dangers of electronic cigarettes on the health of children and adolescents, as a recent study revealed their ability to cause significant damage to blood vessels and the heart due to the chemicals used to give them a specific flavor.
Therefore, the National Rally of Independents parliamentary group is calling on the government to take urgent measures to combat the spread of electronic cigarette use among children and adolescents.
