The Parliament has set a date for a joint session on Wednesday, April 24th, to present the government’s progress report. According to a press release, this session will be held in accordance with Article 101 of the constitution. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Speaker of the Council of Advisors have invited members of both chambers to attend this session, which will take place in the main hall of the House of Representatives.
Reason for Delay
Government Spokesperson Clarifies
There was a lot of debate surrounding the postponement of the government’s progress report presentation. Mustafa Baytas, the government spokesperson and Minister Delegate for Parliamentary Relations, addressed the issue after revealing the reasons for the session delay. Baytas explained that it was too early to discuss a report that had not yet been presented. He emphasized that the media, experts, and those interested in public policies would analyze the report once it was available.
Constitutional Requirement
Baytas explained that Article 101 of the constitution states that the Prime Minister must present the government’s progress report to Parliament either on his own initiative or upon the request of one-third of the House of Representatives or a majority of the Council of Advisors. In this case, the Prime Minister initiated the joint session to present the report.
Respect for Parliament
Baytas highlighted the importance of the government’s respect for Parliament and its role in discussing public policies. He stated that the real place for debate is within the Parliament dome, and afterwards, other spaces can be opened for evaluation.
Session Postponed
The Speaker of the House of Representatives informed the Prime Minister of the postponement of the joint session due to the inability to complete the restructuring of the House of Representatives.
It is worth mentioning that the House of Representatives completed its structures on Monday by electing committee heads after reaching agreements between majority and opposition leaders.
