The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Meets in Rabat to Determine Morocco’s Hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) convened an important meeting today, Friday, in the capital Rabat, to discuss several critical issues concerning African football. Foremost among them is the organization of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 by Morocco and the finalization of its schedule, as well as the continental competitions calendar.

The issue of determining the schedule for the AFCON 2025 in Morocco is the most significant item on the agenda of today’s CAF meeting. It is expected that the Executive Committee will discuss the possibility of postponing the tournament from its original date in the summer of 2025 to the winter of 2026 or 2027, at the request of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

This request from FIFA stems from the AFCON coinciding with the new edition of the FIFA Club World Cup featuring 24 teams, scheduled to be held in the summer of 2025, in addition to the FIFA World Cup for national teams set for the summer of 2026.

The postponement of the AFCON 2025 has become almost inevitable due to the difficulty of organizing it on its original schedule. The magazine “Jeune Afrique” suggests January and February 2025 as a possible alternative, while ruling out other options for various reasons:

  • June and July: Undesirable due to the organization of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
  • July and August: Not suitable for players, as they prefer rest after the FIFA Club World Cup before engaging in another tournament.
  • January and February 2026: Difficult to implement due to its overlap with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, posing a burden on African players.

Supportive statements for the postponement include those from the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, who indicates that organizing the AFCON will not coincide with the FIFA Club World Cup and suggests postponing it until after the Club World Cup or at another suitable time.

The magazine “Jeune Afrique” emphasizes the necessity of postponing the tournament to give it its full right of organization and success, and to avoid any conflicts with other tournaments at the continental and global levels.

The decision of CAF regarding the schedule of the AFCON 2025 is eagerly awaited by all football fans in Africa. All indications suggest that postponement is inevitable, with January or February 2025 being the preferred scenario.

Today’s CAF meeting marks an important milestone in determining the fate of the AFCON 2025. Various regional and international challenges are being considered, suggesting a scenario of postponement to ensure the organization of a distinguished continental tournament befitting the status of African football.
