The United States exercised its veto power in the United Nations Security Council yesterday, Thursday, to prevent the issuance of a resolution that would open the door to granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations.
Despite the draft resolution, presented by Algeria, which “recommends the General Assembly to accept Palestine as a member of the United Nations,” receiving support from 12 members, opposition from the United States and the abstention of the remaining two states led to its failure.
The Palestinian Authority expressed its deep disappointment with this decision, considering it “a continuation of the United States’ biased policy towards Israel.”
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called for “maximum restraint” in the region, warning that “the Middle East is on the brink of the abyss.”
Guterres emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages.
He also called for “de-escalation” in the occupied West Bank, expressing concern about the “explosive situation” there.
These developments come amid escalating tensions in the region following the recent war on Gaza that erupted on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 1,160 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to Agence France-Presse.
Israel responded to Hamas’ attack by invading the Strip, resulting in the deaths of over 33,000 people, most of whom were women and children, according to the Ministry of Health affiliated with Hamas.
Despite this setback, the Palestinian Authority reaffirms its determination to continue its efforts to obtain full membership in the United Nations, emphasizing that “this right is non-negotiable.”
This decision is expected to have wide-ranging regional and international ramifications, likely leading to increased tension in the region and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
