The Criminal Chamber for Financial Crimes at the Fes Court of Appeal, in the late hours of yesterday, Tuesday, convicted the “Aurash Program Manipulation Network” to imprisonment and a fine.
According to the available details, the court sentenced two individuals to two years in prison each and a fine of 20,000 dirhams each. The same court also sentenced three individuals to one year in prison with a six-month suspended sentence and a fine of 10,000 dirhams each, after they were convicted of “extortion, embezzlement of public funds, bribery, abuse of power, and forgery of official documents.”
The details of this case go back to the involvement of the defendants in manipulating the “Aurash” program by submitting forged documents to obtain funding for projects that do not exist on the ground, which caused a waste of public money.
On January 4, 2024, the regional judicial police brigade in Fes arrested 5 suspects involved in manipulating contracts for the “Aurash” program in the city, based on precise information provided by the services of the General Directorate of National Surveillance.
This was done through their extortion of “Aurash” workers to register them on the workers’ lists of this program launched by the government to provide direct employment opportunities in temporary construction sites.
Investigations revealed that the suspects were imposing on those who wished to benefit from the program either to pay bribes in exchange for their registration or to receive a portion of the compensation they receive without doing any actual work.
These incidents confirm the seriousness of the phenomenon of corruption that affects some government programs aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, which calls for more vigilance and firmness from the competent authorities to ensure the proper functioning of these programs and achieve their noble goals.
These judicial rulings confirm the Moroccan judiciary’s commitment to combating corruption and financial crimes, and protecting public funds from waste and manipulation.
