Sahara: Belgium reiterates its support for the autonomy plan

Belgium’s Position

Belgium sees Morocco’s autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as a serious and credible effort by Morocco and a good basis for a solution accepted by all parties. This stance was expressed in a joint statement adopted during the 3rd meeting of the High Joint Commission for Morocco-Belgium Partnership, co-chaired on Monday in Rabat by the Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, and the Belgian Prime Minister, Mr. Alexander De Croo.

Belgium’s Support

Mr. De Croo reiterated Belgium’s longstanding support for the process led by the United Nations for a just, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution for all parties, as stated in the Declaration.

UN’s Role

Both parties agree on the exclusive role of the UN in the political process and reaffirm their support for UN Security Council Resolution 2703 (2023), which acknowledged the role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, and compromise-based political solution.
