Belgium renewed its support today, Monday, for the self-governance initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, considering it “a serious and credible effort by Morocco and a good basis for reaching an acceptable solution by all parties.”
This came in a joint statement issued following the third meeting of the High Joint Committee for Partnership between Morocco and Belgium, chaired by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo.
The statement emphasized Belgium’s keenness to continue its support for the UN-led process aimed at reaching a just, sustainable, and acceptable political solution to the Western Sahara issue.
Regarding this file, De Croo stressed “the exclusive role of the United Nations in the political process,” reaffirming his country’s support for Security Council Resolution 2703 (2023), which underscores the role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, pragmatic, and sustainable political solution based on consensus.
The two sides also agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in various areas of mutual interest, including economics, investment, energy, agriculture, trade, industry, tourism, education, and culture.
